In a landmark move to strengthen dairy-based rural economies and enhance nutritional security in the Northeast, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research – Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes (ICAR-CIRB), Hisar, has launched a pioneering initiative in collaboration with the Nagaland Bio-Resource Mission (NBRM).

Titled “Nutraceutical Buffalo Milk: A Sustainable Dairy Solution for Nagaland”, the project—implemented under ICAR’s North Eastern Hill (NEH) Programme—aims to introduce high-yielding buffalo germplasm and develop scientifically formulated nutraceutical milk products tailored for local health needs and market opportunities.

🐃 Elite Buffalo Germplasm Transferred to Nagaland

On January 19, 2026, a significant milestone was achieved when ten elite buffaloes from ICAR-CIRB’s advanced breeding stock were formally handed over to NBRM officials in Hisar. The consignment included:

  • 3 lactating buffaloes with calves
  • 7 pregnant buffaloes

These genetically superior animals are selected for high milk yield, disease resilience, and adaptability—critical traits for successful dairy farming in Nagaland’s agro-climatic conditions.

The transfer was flagged off by Dr. T. K. Bhattacharya, Director of ICAR-CIRB, who emphasized the institute’s commitment to inclusive agricultural development:

The transfer was flagged off by Dr. T. K. Bhattacharya, Director of ICAR-CIRB, who emphasized the institute’s commitment to inclusive agricultural development:

“This initiative bridges scientific innovation with grassroots empowerment. By introducing elite buffaloes and nutraceutical dairy technology, we’re enabling sustainable livelihoods while addressing malnutrition through functional foods.”

🏭 State-of-the-Art Demonstration Unit to Drive Local Entrepreneurship

A dedicated Buffalo Husbandry and Milk Value Addition Demonstration Unit is now being established at Razhaphe Basa, Chumukedima, Nagaland. This facility will serve as a nucleus centre for:

  • Scientific buffalo rearing and feeding practices
  • Training for farmers and rural youth in dairy entrepreneurship
  • Pilot-scale production of nutraceutical buffalo milk products—such as fortified milk, probiotic yogurt, immune-boosting beverages, and protein-rich dairy supplements

These value-added products leverage the naturally high-fat, high-protein profile of buffalo milk, enriched with bioactive compounds like conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and immunoglobulins—known for anti-inflammatory and gut-health benefits.

🌱 Strategic Impact: From Farm to Functional Food

The project directly aligns with:

  • National Dairy Plan III
  • Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH)-linked bio-resource initiatives
  • Nagaland’s vision for self-reliant village economies

By creating a complete value chain—from elite animal distribution to branded nutraceutical product development—the initiative empowers local farmers to move beyond raw milk sales and capture higher margins through processing and branding.

Moreover, it addresses dual challenges of rural income stagnation and hidden hunger by promoting nutrient-dense, locally produced functional foods—especially vital for children, women, and elderly populations in remote districts.

🔗 What’s Next?

ICAR-CIRB and NBRM will conduct regular training workshops, veterinary support camps, and market linkage sessions throughout 2026–2027. Success from this pilot is expected to be scaled across other Northeastern states, including Manipur and Mizoram.
