The combined judgeship of Bolangir-Kalahandi started functioning on 17th June 1948 with headquarters at Bolangir. Judgeship of Kalahandi was separated on 28th February 1982 from Bolangir judgeship. After the declaration of Sonepur as District, the Bolangir and Sonepur Judgeship was continued till 22nd June 2012 and the judgeship of Sonepur was separated w.e.f. 23rd June 2012 from Bolangir judgeship.
