The college was sanctioned in 1958 with an aim of producing graduates in veterinary sciences as well as in animal husbandry to fulfil the needs of Vidarbha and Marathwada regions situated in Maharashtra state. Firstly, the intake of the college was 45. Later when it was shifted to the Punjabrao Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola , the capacity was raised to 65 and then again raised 100 ,but was reduced to 80 seats and subsequently again reduced to 61. The college in year 2001-2002 was shifted to Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University.

Nagpur Veterinary College is one of the veterinary college that is located in Nagpur, central India .Each year around 10 to 15 students of the college are selected for postgraduate admissions to other colleges in the country under ICAR programme.The College carry a large alumni created by graduate students, and scientist that work in USA known by AANUNVC (Alumni association of Nagpur Veterinary College in the USA) .The Veterinary College of Nagpur, Nagpur is affiliated to the Indian Council of Agriculture Research, State Agricultural University, State Animal Husbandry Department, Maharashtra Veterinary Council, Veterinary Council of India, New Delhi and State Veterinary Universities.
