The Maharashtra Krishi Vidyapeeth is located in Rahuri and was staretd on March 29 in the year 1968 and later named as Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (MPKV). It is named after the great social reformer "Mahatma Jyotiba Phule". It has started working from October in the year 1969 at Rahuri, District Ahmednagar.. The basic role of Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth University was getting advancement in teaching, research and imparting extension education to the farmers of the State. There are four Agricultural Universities in the State , catering the similar services in their locality. The jurisdiction of Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri extends over Western Maharashtra covering ten districts.The University consists of two stream namely Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering. The undergraduate and post-graduate programmes are offered in both faculties. The University also deals with lower level agricultural education through Agricultural Schools.The University has a great network of research stations spread in different agricultural climatic zones.

Of the three functions, it is important on the part of the University to shift the technology from the research centers to the user education programme.
