The selection process for DRDO Scientist 'B' is generally conducted in two stages by the Recruitment and Assessment Centre (RAC): Shortlisting and Personal Interview.
- Stage I: Shortlisting: Applications are generally shortlisted based on a valid GATE score in the relevant discipline. For some streams, a written descriptive examination may also be part of the shortlisting process before the interview.
- Stage II: Personal Interview (Final Selection): Shortlisted candidates are called for a Personal Interview, which is the sole basis for the final merit list (after shortlisting).
- Weightage: The final selection is based entirely on the performance in the Personal Interview. The GATE score serves only as a threshold for shortlisting (e.g., 80% weightage for GATE score and 20% for academic marks for shortlisting purposes in some cycles).
- Clarification: The total number of candidates shortlisted for the interview is usually restricted to a fixed ratio (e.g., 1:5) of the advertised vacancies. Candidates must qualify in the interview to be considered for the final selection list.
