💼 Key Job Profiles (Evergreen Roles)

  • Faculty Positions (Fellow E to Professor H): These are regular academic roles.10 "Fellow E" is the entry-level for fresh PhDs, while "Professor H" represents senior leadership. Duties include independent research, mentoring doctoral students, and graduate-level teaching.11+1
  • Technical Assistant (Systems/ERP): Critical roles responsible for managing the institute's high-performance computing clusters (like Kabru), ERP systems, and general IT infrastructure.
  • Research Associate (Post-Doctoral): Temporary, research-intensive roles for PhD holders to work on specific projects or independent research for a fixed tenure (usually 1-3 years).12
  • Administrative Trainee / Assistant:13 These roles manage the logistical and administrative backbone of the institute, including accounts, establishment, and academic office management.
  • Project Assistant: Often recruited on a contractual basis for specific research grants, assisting faculty in data analysis, manual curation, or computational modeling.

💰 Salary & Employee Benefits

IMSc follows the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) pay scales for regular staff and approved consolidated stipends for trainees and project staff.14

  • Faculty Pay Levels: * Fellow E: Pay Level 12 (₹78,800 - ₹2,09,200)
    • Reader F: Pay Level 13 (₹1,23,100 - ₹2,15,900)15
    • Professor G/H: Pay Levels 13A to 14 (Up to ₹2,18,200 basic).
  • Technical & Admin Scales: Technical Officers and Administrative Officers typically fall between Pay Levels 7 to 11.

🎯 Selection Process

The selection process at IMSc is designed to identify academic rigor and technical proficiency:

  1. PhD/Integrated PhD: Admission is primarily through national-level exams like JEST, NBHM, or GATE.16 Shortlisted candidates undergo a written test at the institute followed by multiple rounds of personal interviews.
  2. Faculty Recruitment: Applications are usually via a Rolling Advertisement. Selection involves an initial screening, evaluation of research publications, a research seminar at the institute, and an interview by a specialized selection committee.
  3. Non-Faculty (Technical/Admin): Recruitment involves a Written Test to gauge domain knowledge and aptitude, followed by a Skill Test (for technical roles) or an Interview (for officer-grade posts).17
  4. Project Staff: Selection is typically conducted via Walk-in Interviews or interviews based on a screened list of applicants who applied via email.18

💡 Expert Tips: How to Crack IMSc Exams

  • Focus on Fundamentals: For PhD and Junior Research Fellow (JRF) roles, the written tests and interviews focus heavily on core concepts in Physics or Mathematics rather than rote memorization.
  • Research Statement: Faculty and RA applicants must provide a concise "Planned Research Statement" (usually for 3-5 years).19 This should align with the core research groups at IMSc.
  • Proficiency in Programming: For Technical Assistant or Computational Biology roles, sound knowledge of C++, Python, or Matlab is almost always tested.
