About National AIDS Research Institute

HIV infection was detected in India for the first time in 1986. In the early nineties it became evident that HIV was spreading widely in the country and the national efforts for its containment required multi-disciplinary research involving virology, immunology, microbiology, clinical research, epidemiology, field based trials and socio behavioural investigations. An institute devoted exclusively to HIV/AIDS research was thus formed in 1992 with the name ‘National AIDS Research Institute (NARI)’.

ICMR-NARI is located at Bhosari, Pune on a seven acre plot. Since its inception the Institute has ably supported the National AIDS Control Programme, especially in the areas of surveillance, capacity building, laboratory services and drug resistance studies. ICMR-NARI derives strength from wide ranging National and International Collaborations.

The Institute's research activities are guided by a Scientific Advisory Committee which includes eminent scientists from varied disciplines. All research projects are reviewed and approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee, which ensures that a research activities are conducted maintaining highest ethical standards. Community involvement and community participation in the studies have always been followed as core principal from the conception of new ideas to implementation and final dissemination of results.

🏛️ Organization Overview

The National Institute of Translational Virology and AIDS Research (NITVAR), formerly known as the National AIDS Research Institute (NARI), is at the forefront of India’s battle against viral pathogens. Under the aegis of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the institute’s mission has expanded from focusing solely on HIV/AIDS to a broader spectrum of translational virology. Its work includes the discovery of countermeasures, development of diagnostic tools, and clinical trials for vaccines that protect millions of citizens.

NITVAR operates out of a high-tech facility in Bhosari, Pune, housing state-of-the-art Bio-Safety Level (BSL) laboratories. The institute plays a strategic role in national health security, often collaborating with global bodies like the WHO. For a professional, joining NITVAR means being part of a national response team that investigates outbreaks and develops the scientific framework for India's public health policies.

💼 Key Job Profiles (Evergreen Roles)

  • Technical Assistant: A vital Group B role focusing on laboratory management, assisting in complex diagnostic assays, and maintaining high-end research equipment like Flow Cytometers or Sequencers.
  • Technician / Lab Attendant: Entry-level technical roles responsible for sample collection, basic laboratory processing, and assisting senior researchers in day-to-day experimental protocols.
  • Administrative & Accounts Staff: Includes roles like Upper Division Clerk (UDC) and Section Officers who manage the institute's human resources, procurement, and financial audits.

💰 Salary & Employee Benefits

  2. Skill Test: Positions like LDC/UDC or Laboratory Technicians may require a qualifying typing or practical laboratory skill test.
  3. Personal Interview: Mandatory for Scientist-level (Group A) positions. For lower-level technical and admin roles, interviews are generally replaced by merit in the written exam as per Govt. norms.
  4. Document Verification & Medical: Finalists undergo a rigorous background check and a medical fitness examination.

💡 Expert Tips: How to Crack NITVAR Exams

  • Master the Fundamentals: For technical roles, focus heavily on Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology. NITVAR exams often prioritize practical application of these subjects in a lab setting.
  • Stay Updated on Virology Trends: Read recent reports from ICMR and the Ministry of Health regarding outbreak investigations (e.g., Nipah, Zika, or COVID-19 variants). This is crucial for the Scientist-level interviews.
  • Aptitude for Precision: For administrative roles, practice previous years' ICMR assistant papers. Accuracy in the "General Intelligence" section is often the tie-breaker.
