Haryana was carved out of the former state of East Punjab on November 1, 1966, on a linguistic basis. It is bordered by Himachal Pradesh to the northeast, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh to the east, Rajasthan to the west and south, and Punjab to the northwest. The state surrounds the country’s capital, Delhi, on three sides. Its capital is Chandigarh, which it shares with the neighboring state of Punjab.
