Central Government Health Scheme Chennai was that scheme that was introduced in Chennai in the year 1975, with 4 dispensaries to begin with.CGHS wellness centers are the backbone of the Scheme and provide health services to the beneficiaries. Currently, there are in all 14 wellness centres at CGHS which covers all the areas of metropolitan city which also some suburban areas like Avadi.To match up with the modern times, computerisation work was taken up under CGHS in association with the National Informatics Centre. Because of Computerization, CGHS have got lots of benefits like less waiting period ,availability of patient profiles, availability of medicines / drugs less use of paper ,etc.It also provides service through Allopathic and Indian System of Medicines (Ayurveda, Siddha, Homeopathy)

The "Central Government Health Scheme" (CGHS) was the plan specially for the Government employees and for their family was established in New Delhi in the year 1954.
