Higher education is an important mirror of the social, economic, and cultural development of any region. Higher education plays an important role in the all-around development of human resources. Indian higher education system has the distinction of being the third-largest in the world after America and China. Keeping in view the importance of 'knowledge and research in national development, many efforts are being made by the central and state governments for the development of higher education.

After the establishment of the state of Uttarakhand, in a period of 20 years, there has been a rapid development of higher education in the state in numerical terms. At present 33 universities (11 state universities, 01 central universities, 03 deemed universities, and 18 private universities) 03 institutions of national importance, 119 government colleges, 21 non-government colleges, and many other private institutions are operating in the state.
