Enterovirus Research Centre (ERC) was established in the year 1981. It is located in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The Enterovirus Research Centre (ICMR) conducts research on diseases caused by Enteroviruses, especially paralytic poliomyelitis, acute flaccid paralysis, acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, aseptic meningitis/ encephalitis and acute gastroenteritis caused by enteric viruses such as Rotavirus, Norovirus and enteroviruses.

The following are the thrust areas of ERC Epidemiology of poliomyelitis for development of policies and strategies for disease control and eradication - Studies on poliomyelitis vaccines such as immunization schedules, vaccination campaigns, evaluation and improvements of vaccine delivery systems; Assistance to the Global Polio Eradication Program through laboratory support for disease diagnosis, understanding disease transmission by molecular epidemiology studies, evaluation of program progress, designing, testing and validating newer assays, participating in introduction of newer vaccine formulations and contributions to national policy on polio eradication.
