After the earthquake took place on 26th January, 2001, Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) was immediately started as a 'Society’ under the provisions of the Societies Registration Act and the Bombay Public Trust Act on 8 February 2001. GSDMA was firstly assigned to implement the large task of rehabilitation and reconstruction programme of areas affected by the earthquake. The Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) is a part that works under the provisions of the Gujarat State Disaster Management Act 2003, that came into existence 1st September 2003.Its Head Office is located at Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The GSDMA is responsible for effective management of disasters, providing emergency relief during and after the disasters occurs.

In the year 2012, The Gujarat Institute of Disaster Management (GIDM) was entered as an autonomous body under the act of societies registration, 1860. In August, 2012, The Government of Gujarat provided a land for starting the Institute at village Raisan near Gandhinagar. The Institute conduct training for government people and to some members of panchayati in various aspects of disaster management.
