The Institute is established in the year 1981 under the World Bank assisted Karnataka Sericulture Project as an autonomous, non-commercial, non-profit making, applied Research and Development Institute, registered under Karnataka Societies Registration Act, 1960 (No.10/81-82 dt. 10.4.1981, MOA-No. CI-166/SLP/80/Bangalore Dated 7.3.1981) with the main object of addressing R & D aspects of the Department of Sericulture, GOK, with special emphasis to the field problems. The Institute has been established with adequate infrastructure facilities, well-equipped laboratories, sophisticated equipment, and qualified scientists. The Institute is conducting research on all aspects of sericulture right from soil to fabric besides the by-products.
