Odisha Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (OPGC) is a Government Company of the State of Odisha. It operates state of the art thermal power plants at Banharpalli, Jharsuguda. It has a total generation capacity of 1740 MW (2x210 MW in first phase and 2x660MW in second phase). Incorporated on November 14, 1984, OPGC started as a wholly owned Government Company of the State of Odisha with the main objective of establishing, operating & maintaining large Thermal power generating stations.
In the pursuit of its objective, OPGC established IB Thermal Power Station having two units of 210 MW each in the Ib valley area of Jharsuguda District in the State of Odisha in the first phase. These Units became operational in 1994 (1st Unit) and 1996 (2nd Unit) respectively. The entire generation from these units are committed to Gridco – the state owned Power Transmission & Trading Company on the basis of a long-term power purchase agreement.
Two more units (Unit 3 & 4) having capacity of 660 MW each were added in the second phase in the year 2019 which added a capacity of 1320 MW to the earlier existing 420 MW to IB Thermal Power Station.
As a part of the reform in the energy sector of the state, 49% of the equity was divested in favour of a Private investor ( American Company) i.e. AES Corporation, USA in early 1999. After exit of AES in December 2020, Govt. of Odisha (GoO) acquired the 49% equity held by AES through another subsidiary of GoO Odisha Hydro Power Corporation Ltd. (OHPC). Thus OPGC became a fully owned company of the Government of Odisha w.e.f. 10th December 2020.
