Job Profile & Responsibilities

SCRA is a unique program that trains candidates to become mechanical engineers for the Indian Railways. Their responsibilities as engineers in the Indian Railways typically involve:

Candidates aiming for the SCRA 2026 examination must meet the following criteria:

• Educational Qualification: Must have passed or be appearing for the final examination of the 10+2 system with Physics and Mathematics. Candidates who have passed or are appearing for a degree in Engineering from a recognized university are also eligible. Graduation in Engineering is NOT a disqualification.
• Age Limit: Candidates must be between 15 and 19 years of age as on 1st August 2026. The upper age limit is relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST candidates and 3 years for OBC candidates.
• Nationality: Must be a citizen of India.
• Marital Status: Male candidates who are married, or who have at any time been married, shall be eligible for admission; provided that not more than one wife is alive at the time of their application.

Selection Process & Exam Pattern

The selection process for SCRA 2026 is rigorous and typically involves two stages:

1. Written Examination: This is a highly competitive exam conducted by UPSC. It generally comprises of two papers:
   • Mathematics: Objective type, covering topics like Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Vectors, Matrices, Probability, etc. (Typically up to 12th standard level).
   • General Ability Test: This paper includes English and General Knowledge. English covers comprehension, grammar, précis writing. General Knowledge covers current affairs, history, geography, science, etc.
2. Interview: Candidates who qualify in the written examination are called for an interview by the UPSC. This assesses their personality, aptitude, and general awareness.

Note: A medical examination is also conducted to ensure candidates meet the physical standards required.

Salary Structure & Allowances

During the 4-year intensive training period at NAIR, candidates receive a stipend. Upon successful completion of the training and appointment to a Group 'A' post in the Indian Railways, selected candidates are placed in the Pay Matrix. The initial pay upon joining as an officer is typically in Pay Level-7 (Rs. 44,900 - 1,42,400). In addition to basic pay, they are entitled to various allowances like Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance (TA), and other benefits as per government rules, which significantly enhance the total remuneration.
