The written examination for Scientific Officers and Scientific Assistants consists of two sections designed to assess both foundational cognitive aptitude and specialized technical prowess:

Section A: General Aptitude & Analytical Reasoning (20% Weightage)

  • Quantitative Ability: Arithmetic fundamentals, percentages, ratios, probability, data interpretation, basic calculus, and statistical distributions.
  • Logical Reasoning: Syllogisms, analytical sequences, series completion, data sufficiency, spatial reasoning, and critical deduction.
  • General English & Scientific Communication: Grammar, comprehension of scientific texts, error detection, vocabulary in context, and technical writing conventions.

Marking Scheme & Negative Marking Rules

The written examination generally comprises 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) carrying 100 or 300 marks depending on whether questions carry 1 or 3 marks each. A negative marking penalty of 0.25 to 0.33 marks per incorrect answer is applied. Unattempted questions attract zero marks. Minimum qualifying cutoff thresholds are typically 50% for General/EWS candidates and 40% for reserved categories.
