Civil Services Examination (CSE)

The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of the most prestigious and sought-after exams conducted by the UPSC. It is held annually and comprises three stages: the Preliminary Examination, the Main Examination, and the Interview (Personality Test).

Preliminary Examination: The Preliminary Examination consists of two objective-type papers: General Studies Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II (CSAT). The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination are not counted for the final selection but are used for qualifying for the Main Examination.

Main Examination: The Main Examination is a written examination consisting of nine papers, including an essay paper, four General Studies papers, two optional subject papers, and two language papers (qualifying in nature). The Main Examination assesses the comprehensive understanding of candidates on various subjects.

Interview (Personality Test): Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are called for the Interview, also known as the Personality Test. It aims to assess the candidate’s personality traits, communication skills, leadership qualities, and overall suitability for a career in the civil services.
