CSIR-NGRI Technical Assistant (Group III) Exam Pattern
The competitive written examination for Technical Assistant is conducted in a single day across three sequential papers. Only candidates who qualify in the Trade Test are issued admit cards for the written examination:

1. Mental Ability & Reasoning (Paper I)
Designed to test logical comprehension, pattern recognition, and numerical ability:
- Analogies, spatial visualization, classification, and Venn diagrams.
- Arithmetic number series, non-verbal series, coding and decoding.
- Data Interpretation: tables, bar graphs, histograms, and pie charts.
- Statement analysis, syllogisms, and critical logical deduction.
2. General Awareness & English Language (Paper II)
- General Awareness: National and international scientific developments, Earth and space sciences, climate change, Indian geography, environmental ecology, Indian constitution, and national economic policies.
- English Comprehension: Reading comprehension passages, error detection, synonyms/antonyms, sentence completion, active/passive voice, idiomatic expressions, and scientific vocabulary.
3. Domain Disciplines (Paper III)
- Geophysics & Earth Sciences: Fundamentals of seismology, wave propagation, Snell's law, seismic reflection & refraction surveys, gravity and magnetic prospecting, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), induced polarization (IP), magnetotellurics (MT), well logging principles, and geophysical instrumentation.
- Electronics & Instrumentation: Operational amplifiers, digital signal processing, ADCs/DACs, sensor interfacing (geophones, seismometers, fluxgate magnetometers), microcontroller programming, telemetry systems, RF communications, and laboratory calibration standards.
- Geology & Mineralogy: Petrology (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic), structural geology, plate tectonics, stratigraphy of the Indian subcontinent, hydrogeology, groundwater flow mechanics, and remote sensing/GIS applications.
Technician Grade-II Exam Pattern
For ITI trade technician posts (Surveyor, Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Draughtsman, Fitter, Computer Operator), the exam comprises:
- Trade Test: Practical evaluation of tool handling, circuit wiring, precision measurements, drawing software (AutoCAD/GIS), or machinery operation.
- Written Test: Paper I (Mental Ability - 50 Qs / 100 Marks, No negative marking), Paper II (General Awareness & English - 50 Qs / 150 Marks, 1 mark negative), and Paper III (Trade Subject - 50 Qs / 150 Marks, 1 mark negative). Total composite marks for merit: 300 marks.
