The erstwhile judgeship of Jalpaiguri-Malda-West Dinajpur was established during the British Rule in 1890. In 1981, the judgeship of Malda-West Dinajpur was separated from Jalpaiguri-Malda-West Dinajpur judgeship under the Hon’ble High Court at Calcutta in the state of West Bengal. The judgeship of West Dinajpur was further bifurcated from the judgeship of Malda-West Dinajpur on 16th May, 1983.
The judgeship of West Dinajpur was divided into Dakshin Dinajpur District Judiciary and Uttar Dinajpur District Judiciary on 24th September, 1992.
On 21st September, 1998 a Sub-Divisional Court for Gangarampur Sub-Division was established at Buniadpur under Dakshin Dinajpur District Court, Balurghat.
Presently, there are eleven courts at the district headquarters at Balurghat and four courts at Gangarampur Sub-Division at Buniadpur, Dakshin Dinajpur.
