The appointment is purely on a contract basis for an initial period of six months, which may be extended further based on performance. Completion of the contract period confers no right to further extension, regularization, or permanency at the Institute.

Eligibility Criteria & Educational Qualification

• Educational Qualification (JRF):
  • A four-year bachelor's degree in Civil / Agricultural / Geomatics Engineering.
  • A two-year master's degree in Civil / Agricultural and allied Engineering disciplines with specialisation in Hydrology / Hydraulics / Water Resources / Irrigation Water Management / Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, or equivalent.
• Gate / Selection Process Requirement:
  • (a) Candidates must have passed GATE, OR
  • (b) Candidates should clear the national-level selection processes to be conducted by IIT Madras specific to this advertisement.
• Desirable Experience: Expertise in GIS (QGIS, ArcGIS), Field Hydrology measurements, and hydrologic modelling tools (Mike+, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM) will be given preference.
• Nationality: Citizens of India. Subjects of Nepal and persons who have migrated from Pakistan with intention to settle permanently in India are also eligible (subject to a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India).
• Cutoff Date: The crucial date for determining eligibility is 09 November 2026. Only relevant experience gained after the minimum qualifying degree will be considered.

Selection Process & Screening Clause

• Candidates will be shortlisted for the written test/skill test/interview based on the information provided in the online application.
• IIT Madras reserves the right to limit the number of candidates called for the test/interview to a reasonable number based on qualifications, higher levels of experience, and academic achievements.
• Applicants already working on any project at IIT Madras must apply through the proper channel. A No-Objection Certificate (NOC) must be produced at document verification/interview. Candidates without an NOC will not be allowed to appear.
• Admission to any stage of the selection process is provisional until eligibility is verified.
• No TA/DA will be paid for attending the written test, skill test, or interview.

• All Degree (B.E/B.Tech) and Master (M.E/M.Tech) Consolidated Mark Sheets.
• GATE Scorecard / Certificate (if applicable).
• Valid Category / Caste Certificate (if applicable).
• Printed copy of the submitted online application form.
• No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the current employer (if applicable).
• Two recent passport-size photographs & Valid Photo ID Proof (Aadhaar / Voter ID / PAN).

How to Apply for IIT Madras Junior Research Fellow (JRF)

1. Visit the official IC&SR careers portal at icandsr.iitm.ac.in/careers/current_openings.php.
2. Register on the portal using a correct and active email address (all correspondence is sent via email).
3. Find advertisement number ICSR/PR/Advt.220/2026 and submit the application for the relevant position.
4. Only one application is accepted per registered login ID per advertisement. A separate application must be filled for each post if applying for more than one.
5. Submit the application by 09 November 2026. Once submitted, the application cannot be edited.
6. Take a printout of the application form. It must be submitted during document verification or test/interview.
