The college was sanctioned in 1958 with an aim of producing graduates in veterinary sciences as well as in animal husbandry to fulfil the needs of Vidarbha and Marathwada regions situated in Maharashtra state. Firstly, the intake of the college was 45. Later when it was shifted to the Punjabrao Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola , the capacity was raised to 65 and then again raised 100 ,but was reduced to 80 seats and subsequently again reduced to 61. The college in year 2001-2002 was shifted to Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University.
