About Puducherry Police

The Puducherry Police is the law enforcement agency for the Puducherry Union Territory of India. The Puducherry Police works under the direct control of the Home Affairs Department and Puducherry Government. The force is controlled by the Director General of Police (DGP). In the year 2013, the Puducherry Police had about 4000 candidate of which 150 were women.The main focus to have more women officers is that every police station has one woman officer in it. The jurisdiction of Puducherry Police is over to Puducherry, Yanam, Karaikal and Mahe. The police force has prisons located in Kalapet, Yanam and Karaikal. It has plans to open an open prison. The main aim of the Puducherry police is to support the rule of law without any fear and to give safety and security to the people without breaking the Human Rights.

The new scheme was proposed by the team that was controlled by Sri Balakrishna Shetty that came into existence on 1st June 1967 and continues up till now. Pondicherry Police Commission worked under Shri Pon Paramaguru that was sanctioned in the year 1990, whose documents were submitted to the government in 1991 that asked for different charges, augmentation of manpower,etc. The Indian Government, in the meantime, have informed that on 3rd March 1998, the post of police chief is upgraded to a full-fledged Inspector General.
