About DHGMC

Diamond Harbour Government Medical College & Hospital (DHGMCH) has a rich legacy of serving the people since its inception in December 1974 as Diamond Harbour Sub-divisional Hospital. Over time, it evolved into Diamond Harbour District Hospital in April 2012 with a capacity of 300 beds, and subsequently attained its current stature as DHGMCH in June 2018. Presently, in May 2025, we have the capacity of 734 beds.

Located in the historic town of Diamond Harbour—formerly known as Hajipur-on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, the college stands as a beacon of healthcare and education for the region. It serves as the headquarters of the Diamond Harbour subdivision and police district, catering to a vast rural population, including the vulnerable Sundarban delta area.

In August 2019, DHGMCH welcomed its first batch of 100 MBBS students following the grant of Letter of Permission (LOP) by the National Medical Commission (NMC), formerly the Medical Council of India (MCI). We are planning to increase the seats with necessary documents underway.

🏛️ Organization Overview

Diamond Harbour Government Medical College and Hospital (DHGMCH) was established to bridge the gap in tertiary healthcare for the rural and suburban populations of the South 24 Parganas district. Affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS), the institution is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It serves as a crucial referral center for the Sundarbans region, handling high patient volumes across its 700+ bed facility.

Beyond clinical care, the organization is a center for academic research and medical training. It operates various specialized units, including a Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) and a Thalassaemia Control Unit. Recruitment here is largely governed by the West Bengal Health Recruitment Board (WBHRB) for permanent cadres, while the college administration frequently conducts local recruitment for contractual and project-based roles.

💼 Key Job Profiles (Evergreen Roles)

🎯 Selection Process

The selection process at DHGMCH varies based on the nature of the vacancy:

  1. Permanent State Cadre (WBHRB): Recruitment for permanent Nurses and Medical Officers is conducted via the West Bengal Health Recruitment Board through a combination of academic weightage and personal interviews.
  2. Faculty Positions: Selection is based on NMC guidelines, involving a verification of teaching experience, research publications, and a formal interview.
  3. Contractual/Project Roles: These are usually filled through Walk-in Interviews advertised on the official website. Selection is based on a merit list derived from academic scores (85% weightage) and the interview (15% weightage).

💡 Expert Tips: How to Crack DHGMCH Exams

  • Focus on State Council Registration: Ensure your registration with the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) or West Bengal Nursing Council (WBNC) is active, as this is a mandatory eligibility criterion for most roles.
  • Academic Excellence: Since many selections at the state level rely heavily on "Academic Weightage," keep your professional degree certificates and mark sheets well-documented.
  • Prepare for Local Context: During interviews for clinical roles, be prepared for questions regarding common regional health issues in West Bengal, such as tropical diseases and public health schemes like Swasthya Sathi.
