Prior to 1995, under the Department of Public Health and Family Welfare, medical education and healthcare was in the state. In order to promote medical education in mid-state from the view of providing health care in the state as a whole, the medical education department was established by the State Government in the year 1995. After the formation of the Medical Education Department, there has been a steady progress in all areas of medical education and continuous new medical colleges, dental colleges, nursing colleges and paramedical colleges have been established.
The first medical college of 17th and State of Madhya Pradesh was established in Gwalior in the year 1946. In the year 1948, the medical college in Indore, the medical college of Bhopal and medical college Jabalpur in the year 1955, the Rewa of the medical college in year 1963 and the medical college of the sea was established in year 2009. Sagar Medical College was started in Bundelkhand area of the state. Which is the first official Swassea medical college in the region. The first government dental college in the state was established in 1961 in Idrar.
Seven (Vidisha, Datia, Khandwa, Ratlam, Shahdol, Shivpuri, Chhindwara) are in the process of establishment of new government medical colleges. The construction work of the medical college building in Datia, Khandwa, Vidisha, Ratlam, Shahdol is in progress.
People's College of Medical Science and Research Center Bhanpur Bhopal, Sri Arvindo Institute of Medical Sciences Indore, RD Gardi Medical College Ujjain, Indek Medical College, Indore, L.N., for promoting medical education in private sector in the state. Medical College Bhopal, RKDF Medical College Bhopal, Amtalas Medical College, Dewas, Modern MEdical College, Sukhsagar Medical College, Jabalpur and Advanced Medical College, Bhopal.
