Sikkim High Court stands as the solitary and apex judicial institution in India's smallest state. Its establishment marked a significant milestone in Sikkim's legal history, evolving from the High Court of Judicature (Royal) of the former Kingdom of Sikkim to a full-fledged High Court of the Indian Union after the state's accession in 1975. Initially functioning as the High Court of Assam (with the Judge of the Assam High Court acting as the Judge of Sikkim), it was formally inaugurated as a separate High Court on May 16, 1975. This transition symbolized the integration of Sikkim's unique legal traditions with the unified judicial system of India, ensuring the administration of justice at the highest level within the state.
The Sikkim High Court holds the unique distinction of being the smallest High Court in India, both in terms of its territorial jurisdiction and the size of its bench. For many years, it functioned with a single Judge, a position held by the Chief Justice. This structure underscored its compact yet crucial role in the state's governance.
