The ICAR-Indian Institute of Water Management (ICAR-IIWM), located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is a premier research institute under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Established in 1988, the institute is dedicated to developing efficient and sustainable water management technologies for enhancing agricultural productivity. Its mission includes promoting scientific water use, conserving water resources, and supporting farmers through research, extension, and training programs. ICAR-IIWM plays a critical role in addressing water-related challenges in Indian agriculture, particularly in the context of climate change, declining water tables, and increasing demand for irrigation.
The institute undertakes multidisciplinary research on various aspects of water management, including irrigation scheduling, groundwater assessment, water quality, rainwater harvesting, and watershed development. It collaborates with national and international organizations to promote innovative technologies such as micro-irrigation, precision farming, and integrated water resource management. Through its outreach activities, training sessions, and capacity-building programs, ICAR-IIWM empowers farmers, researchers, and policymakers to adopt best practices for water conservation and sustainable agriculture.
