The Panchayat and Rural Development Assam was established by the Assam Government in the year 1952.The erstwhile Panchayat and Rural Development have been merged into one Department in the name and style as Panchayat & Rural Development from 1st July in the year 1989. Assam was one of the States in India to reacted Panchayat Act and started the Panchayati Raj in the State when the Act of Assam Rural Panchayat was passed, in the year 1948.
