About Central Electrochemical Research Institute

On July 25, 1948, Karaikudi, a hitherto bleak and desolate village in Tamil Nadu, wore a festive look. A mammoth crowd of more than a lakh people gathered to witness the ushering in of a new era in Indian science. It was the day the CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI) was founded at Karaikudi. The institute took root in the patriotic fervor of RM. Alagappa Chettiar, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr. Shanthi Swarup Bhatnagar. Fast forward five years, on January 14, 1953, the institution became a reality when Dr. S. Radhakrishnan dedicated CSIR-CECRI, the 12th national laboratory under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), to the nation.

The eligibility criteria for recruitment at CECRI can vary based on the specific post. However, general standards are as follows:

  • Age Limit: Typically 18-30 years for Scientist posts (relaxation as per government norms for OBC/SC/ST/PWD). For Technical and Assistant posts, age limits are generally between 18-27 years, with relaxations.
  • Educational Qualification:
    • Scientist: Master's degree in relevant science disciplines (e.g., Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science) or B.Tech/B.E. in relevant engineering branches. A Ph.D. is often preferred or essential for higher scientific positions.
    • Technical Officer/Assistant: Diploma in Engineering or Technology (Polytechnic) in relevant branches (e.g., Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Instrumentation) or a B.Sc. degree in a relevant science subject.
    • Scientific Assistant: B.Sc. degree or Diploma in Engineering.
  • Experience: While entry-level positions (Scientist B) may not require prior experience (GATE score or Ph.D. is key), higher scientific or technical roles might prefer some years of relevant research or industrial experience.

Recruitment Mode & Selection Procedure

CECRI generally recruits directly through advertisements released on its official website (cecri.res.in) and in the Employment News. The selection process is typically merit-based and may involve one or more of the following stages:

  1. Shortlisting: Candidates are shortlisted based on academic qualifications, GATE scores (for Scientist positions), or other specified criteria.
  2. Written Examination: For certain technical or administrative posts, a written test might be conducted to assess subject knowledge and aptitude.
  3. Interview: A Personal Interview is a crucial stage, especially for scientific positions. It assesses the candidate's technical knowledge, research aptitude, communication skills, and suitability for the role.
  4. Document Verification: Successful candidates will undergo verification of their original certificates and documents.

Entry Gateway for Scientist Positions: For Scientist positions (especially Scientist-B), a valid GATE score in a relevant discipline is often a primary requirement for shortlisting. Alternatively, candidates with a Ph.D. in a relevant field might be directly considered or interviewed.

Salary & Perks (7th CPC)

Salaries at CECRI are structured as per the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) recommendations. The typical pay levels are:

  • Scientist-B: Entry-level, placed in Pay Matrix Level 10, with a basic pay typically starting around ₹57,700/- (plus applicable allowances).
  • Technical Officer: Placed in Pay Matrix Level 6, with a basic pay typically starting around ₹35,400/- (plus applicable allowances).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

CECRI stands for the Central Electrochemical Research Institute. It is a national laboratory under the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), which is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. It is primarily a research and development organization.

The most common entry-level scientific position is 'Scientist-B'. For this role, candidates typically need a Master's degree in science or a B.E./B.Tech degree, and a valid GATE score in a relevant discipline is often a prerequisite for shortlisting. Some direct recruitment might be based on a Ph.D. in a relevant field.

CECRI generally does not conduct its own specific written entrance examination for Scientist positions. Instead, recruitment for scientific roles primarily relies on shortlisting candidates based on their academic performance and, crucially, their performance in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for relevant disciplines. For technical or administrative posts, an internal written test or interview might be conducted.

Scientists at CECRI are recruited as Scientist-B, which falls under Pay Matrix Level 10 of the 7th Central Pay Commission. This typically includes a basic pay starting around ₹57,700, along with Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance, and other benefits as per government rules.

The main campus of CECRI is located in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu. It also has regional units or research centers in Chennai and Durgapur.

Applications are typically submitted online through the official CECRI website (cecri.res.in) when recruitment notifications are released. Candidates need to fill the application form, upload required documents, and pay the prescribed fee before the deadline. Keep an eye on the 'Recruitment' section of their website or the Employment News for announcements.

Besides scientific roles, CECRI also recruits for technical positions like Technical Assistant, Technical Officer, and Senior Technical Officer. These roles require a Diploma in Engineering or a B.Sc. degree and support the research activities within the institute's various labs and facilities.

While CSIR sets overall guidelines, each constituent laboratory, including CECRI, usually recruits independently. They release their own notifications and conduct their own selection processes based on their specific needs and CSIR's recruitment rules. However, some common scientist recruitments might be facilitated centrally in certain instances.
