Rajasthan is a state where Ayurveda has gradually expanded and strengthened and the main reason behind this has been the protection policy of the state government towards Indian medical systems. The learned Ayurveda experts of the state have worked with full dedication and selflessness to keep the original form of this system intact. The Guru-Shishya tradition has made an important contribution in the development of Ayurveda medical system in the state.
Initially Ayurveda was taught along with Sanskrit education. An Ayurveda college was established in Jaipur by the rulers of the erstwhile Jaipur state, patronizing it. There were also such educational institutions in the erstwhile states of Udaipur and Alwar, where Ayurveda was taught. Chemistries for manufacturing Ayurvedic medicines were established in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur. Before the creation of Rajasthan, in the year 1950, 346 Ayurveda dispensaries were being operated in various princely states.
