Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for Research Fellow

  • Essential: Post Graduate in Law (under 10+2+3+3+2 or 10+2+5+2 pattern) from recognized Universities in the Indian Union and recognized by the Bar Council of India for admission as Advocate or Attorney of an Indian Court.
  • Experience: Refer to official notification.
  • Desirable: Skilled in the usage of computer including retrieval of desired information from various search engines/processes/Online Law Journals, etc.

  • Essential: Graduate in Law (under 10+2+3+3 or 10+2+5 pattern) from recognized Universities in the Indian Union and recognized by the Bar Council of India for admission as Advocate or Attorney of an Indian Court.

General Eligibility

  • Applicants pursuing Post Graduate Degree in Law or any other Degrees or Programmes requiring their compulsory attendance elsewhere are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicant should not have been involved in any criminal case, whether convicted or against whom criminal trial proceedings are pending.

Age Limit

Applicant must not have attained the age of 30 years as on 01.01.2026 (i.e. applicant should not have been born before 02.01.1996).

Salary / Stipend

  • Research Fellow: Rs. 45,000/- per month (consolidated pay)
  • Research Assistant: Rs. 30,000/- per month (consolidated pay)

Selection Process

The selection will be done by a Committee of Hon’ble Judges / Board of Governors constituted by the Hon’ble The Chief Justice based on:

  • Academic record
  • Achievement in co-curricular activities
  • Performance in the Viva-voce

Note: Viva-voce will be conducted only in Chennai.

About Madras High Court

The Madras High Court is the high court of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The court is one of the three High Courts in India established in the three Presidency Towns of Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras by Letters patent granted by Her Majesty Queen Victoria, bearing date 26 June 1862. It exercises original jurisdiction over the city of Chennai and appellate jurisdiction over the entire state of Tamil Nadu and Union territory of Puducherry, as well as extraordinary original jurisdiction, civil and criminal, under the Letters Patent and special original jurisdiction for the issue of writs under the Constitution of India.

It consists of 74 judges and a chief justice who are in charge of the general policy adopted in the administration of justice. In September 2016, the center government forwarded names of 15 new judges to the President for his signature on their warrants of appointment. Of the 15, nine are from among lawyers and six from the subordinate judiciary.
