National Institute of Abiotic Stress & Management was established on 21st February 2009 at Malegaon Khurd, Baramati.
The abiotic stresses like temperature (heat, cold chilling/frost), water (drought, flooding/hypoxia), radiation (UV, ionizing radiation), chemicals (mineral deficiency/excess, pollutants heavy metals/pesticides, gaseous toxins), mechanical (wind, soil movement, submergence) reduces 50 % of agricultural production. Increasing industrialization is causing contamination of water and land with organics and heavy metals like wise increasing CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are increasing atmospheric temperature and UV radiation are polluting the environment.
National Institute of Abiotic Stress & Management (NIAM) conducts research programme through four schools namely Drought Stress Management, Atmospheric Stress Management, Edaphic Stress Management and Policy support Research.
It exclusively undertakes the strategic and basic research into abiotic stresses faced in India, strategic human resource development, a centralized shared database, and amelioration tactics with the participation of wide network of Indian and International Institutes and exchange programmes. NIAM focuses on basic and strategic research on abiotic stresses which adversely affect agricultural production (including livestock and fisheries) and the results generated can directly be used by the farmers.
