The National University was sanctioned by the National University of Advanced Legal Studies Act, in the year 2005 which was merged with the erstwhile National Institute for Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), that was earlier set up and controlled by the Bar Council of Kerala and Bar Council of Kerala Trust. Later Dr. K. G. Balakrishnan, the Chief Justice, Supreme Court of India and Visitor, then devoted NUALS to the nation on 7th January, 2006 January 7, 2006. Firstly the university was controlled from Kaloor , Cochin. but now it is operated from its permanent campus in KINFRA Hi-Tech Park, situated at Kalamassery.

The National of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) was formerly known as National Institute for Advanced Legal Studies . It is a Uni-disciplinary university that is situated in Kochi,India for both undergraduate as well as postgraduate in legal education. NUALS administer an LL.M. programme in the International Trade Law and in the Constitutional and Administrative Law. In the year 2011-12, the admission was done by Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) that was conducted by National Law Universities.The NUALS also administer the Ph.D. programme ,in association with the rules set by University Grants Commision. The University consists of about more than 400 students which includes about 700 undergraduates , 12 postgraduates and more than 22 doctoral students. The Kerala Government constituted this University by getting merger with the erstwhile National Institute for Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), that was set up and controlled by the Bar Council of Kerala and Bar Council of Kerala Trust.NUALS is a type of National University.
