Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility for Central Secretariat Stenographers Service (CSSS)
- Essential: Regularly appointed Stenographer Grade “D” with not less than six years’ approved service as Stenographer Grade “D” as on 01.07.2025.
- Condition: If appointed via Competitive/LDCE, result announced not less than six years before the crucial date, with at least five years’ approved continuous service.
- Computer Literacy: Required to transcribe shorthand notes on computers.
- Relaxation: Specific relaxations apply for Direct Recruit Steno Grade D of Select List Year 2018.
Eligibility for Indian Foreign Service Branch (B) Stenographers
- Essential: Rendered not less than six years’ approved service per IFS Branch “B” Rules, 2017.
- Training: Must have undergone and successfully completed mandatory training programme(s) prescribed by Ministry of External Affairs.
Eligibility for Armed Forces Headquarters Stenographers Service
- Essential: Not less than three years’ approved and continuous service in Grade “D” as on the crucial date.
- Condition: If appointed via examination, result announced not less than three years before the crucial date with at least two years’ approved continuous service.
Eligibility for Railway Board Secretariat Stenographers Service
- Essential: Regularly appointed Stenographer Grade “D” with not less than six years’ approved service as on 01.07.2025.
- Condition: If appointed via competitive examination, result announced not less than six years before the crucial date with at least five years’ approved continuous service.

Eligibility for Election Commission of India Stenographers Service
- Essential: Not less than three years’ approved and continuous service in Grade “D” as on the crucial date.
- Condition: If appointed via examination, result announced not less than three years before the crucial date with at least two years’ approved continuous service.
Eligibility for Central Vigilance Commission
- Essential: Five years of regular service in the grade of Stenographer Grade “D” in the Commission as on the crucial date.
Selection Process
- Part-A (Computer Based Examination): 200 Marks (General Awareness & English Language).
- Part-B (Short Hand Skill Test): 200 Marks (10 minutes dictation at 100 w.p.m.).
- Part-C (Evaluation of Record of Service): 100 Marks (APARs).
