The SSC CGL selection process has been streamlined and consists primarily of two tiers: Tier-I (Qualifying) and Tier-II (Merit Determining), followed by Document Verification (DV).

Tier-I Examination: This is a Computer-Based Examination (CBE) of objective type, mandatory for all candidates, and is strictly qualifying in nature. Marks obtained in Tier-I are not added to the final merit list.

Tier-II Examination: This is also a CBE, and performance in Tier-II is the sole basis for the final merit list and selection. Tier-II consists of two/three papers:
  • Paper-I (Compulsory for All Posts): Includes three Sections (Mathematical Abilities, Reasoning & General Intelligence; English Language & Comprehension, General Awareness; Computer Knowledge Module, and Data Entry Speed Test Module (DEST)). All sections/modules are mandatory, and certain modules like Computer Knowledge and DEST are qualifying.
  • Paper-II (For JSO only): Statistics.
  • Paper-III (For AAO/AAO only): General Studies (Finance and Economics).

Selection Stages:
1. Tier-I: Screening (Qualifying).
2. Tier-II: Main Examination (Determines Final Merit).
3. Skill Test/CPT/DEST: Mandatory qualifying modules within Tier-II Paper-I for all posts; specifically for certain posts (e.g., Tax Assistant, ASO in CSS/MEA).
4. Document Verification (DV): Conducted after Tier-II for successful candidates.

It is mandatory for candidates to qualify in all sections of Paper-I of Tier-II and the Computer/DEST modules to be considered for selection.
