The standard probation period for most non-gazetted posts (Group 'B' and 'C') filled through SSC examinations, such as CGL and CHSL, is
two years, which is the general norm for Central Government direct recruitment posts.
Key Rules and Confirmation Conditions:
- Duration: The initial period of probation is generally two years from the date of joining the service/post.
- Extension: The Appointing Authority has the power to extend the probation period if the employee's performance, conduct, or suitability is deemed unsatisfactory, or if they fail to pass mandatory departmental examinations/training.
The total extended period of probation, combined with the initial period, typically cannot exceed four years.
- Confirmation: Confirmation in service is granted only upon the successful completion of the prescribed probation period, which includes:
Satisfactory performance of duties and conduct.
Passing of any mandatory departmental training or tests.
The issuance of a formal order of confirmation by the Competent Authority.
- Consequence of Failure: If the probationer is found unsuitable for the post even after the extended period of probation, their services are liable to be terminated, as per the relevant service rules and terms of appointment.
The employee is entitled to the full salary and allowances of the post during the period of probation.
