About Department of Official Language

The Department of Official Language (DOL) is a key department under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, responsible for implementing the Official Languages Act, 1963 and promoting the use of Hindi in government offices. Established in 1975, the department ensures compliance with the constitutional provisions regarding the official language policy of India. It formulates policies, provides guidelines, and conducts training programs to increase the usage of Hindi in official work while also supporting regional languages as per the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. The department also develops technological tools and organizes various initiatives such as the Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar to encourage ministries, public sector undertakings, and banks to actively use Hindi in their official communications.

The DOL operates through various regional and field offices across the country to monitor and evaluate the implementation of Hindi in government functions. It also collaborates with institutions like Central Hindi Training Institute (CHTI) and Kendriya Hindi Prashikshan Sansthan to train government employees in Hindi.
