The Centre for infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore invites applications for researchers in the area of Agent-based Modeling and Simulation. 1. Position: Researcher 2. Eligibility: Ph.D. (or submitted Ph.D. thesis) or Master’s degree in any relevant domain, with a focus on one or more of the following topics: computational statistics (frequentist and/or Bayesian), statistical learning, network science, agent-based simulation, optimization. 3. Description: a) The project involves the development and implementation of large-scale, agent-based model systems for simulating mobility of people and goods, spread of epidemics, urban metabolism, and other social systems involving multi-scale networks (e.g., neighborhood-scale, city-scale, stae-wide, etc.). Statistical models of agent (humans and other agents) behaviour will be combined with equilibrium formulations for arriving at the emergence of higher-order patterns in complex, large-scale systems. b) The initial focus will be on generating a synthetic population of agents in a city and modeling their mobility patterns at a city-scale for use by urban planning agencies. The long-term focus will involve integration with, or expansion toward agent-based simulation of a system of systems cutting across multiple domains (transportation, energy consumption, pollution dispersion, infection spread, etc.). 4. Skills expected: a) Expertise in agent-based modeling and simulation b) Prior experience in the development of agent-based simulation systems in any field – economics, social sciences, transportation, epidemiology, biology, etc. (application experience in the mobility/transportation domain is an advantage, but not required) c) Strong programming skills (Python, C++, databases, R) d) Experience with high-performance computing environment e) Ability to process and analyze large-sized, heterogeneous data sets f) Strong technical writing and communication skills 5. In the 1890s, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, a successful industrialist, decided to set up a world class university in India using his personal wealth. He strongly believed in the role of scientific research and higher education in social and economic transformation.
Tata’s dream of establishing what eventually came to be known as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) became a reality with the support of the Mysore State, whose rulers also shared his commitment towards education and research. The Regent Queen Maharani Kempananjammani Vani Vilasa Sannidhana – her son Krishnaraja Wadiyar was a minor then – provided 371 acres and 16 guntas of land in Bangalore, funds for capital expenditure, and an annual contribution for Tata’s ambitious project. The remaining money to set up IISc came from the colonial government of India.
After overcoming several hurdles, including those resulting from Tata’s untimely death in the summer of 1904, IISc finally came into existence on 27 May 1909 in Bangalore following a vesting order and resolution passed by the government of India to establish the Institute. Its first Director was the English chemist Morris Travers. Twenty-four students joined when the Institute opened its doors to students in 1911.
