About Institute of Microbial Technology

Institute of Microbial Technology Logo

Established in 1984, the CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTech) is one among the chain of 38 national laboratories, 6 units and 39 outreach centres of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research. Set-up to be a fore-runner in the niche domain of microbial biotechnology, the Institute in its initial years functioned from a start-up laboratory that provided a truly world-class R&D ambience in an area of over 10,000 sq. ft. to its researchers. In September, 1989, upon completion of the permanent campus, the Institute shifted to occupy an area of about 47 acres, of which the labs covered 22 acres and the residential campus 25 acres. The Institute covering a built up area of about 3.60 lakh sq. ft., is spread over four main buildings, namely, Main R&D block, Fermentation block, Animal House, Workshop, Stores and Services area, several service building including a guest house and Cafeteria. Recently another block of almost 50000 sq. ft. area (the G.N. Ramachandran Protein Centre) has been added, to cater to R&D in all aspects of Protein science and engineering. The Institute provides laboratories which are functionally modular and offer large, air-conditioned, clean research areas to all the scientists.

The Institute's primary asset is a team of more than 55 highly motivated scientists, with a majority of them having several years of training in world renowned laboratories. Supported by more than 300 well trained technical staff and graduate students, these scientists have built strong peer credibility both in basic and application-oriented broad thematic areas of Molecular biology and microbial genetics, Cell biology and immunology, Protein science and engineering, and Fermentation technology and applied microbiology. These overarching focus areas required enabling research facilities, structures and practices which IMTech has created over the years, recognized nationally to be the best, and globally at par with the best. This required a visionary approach and objectives with a long term mandate of scientific relevance.

It boasts a strong research ecosystem, excellent facilities, and a conducive environment for professional development. As a CSIR lab, it provides the prestige of working in a government-backed premier research institution.

Career Opportunities & Roles

IMTECH primarily recruits for scientific and technical positions. While specific roles vary based on ongoing projects and sanctioned posts, common recruitments include:

  • Scientists (various levels): Group IV (Scientist K, J, I, H, G, F), Group III (Scientist E, D, C), Group II (Scientist B). Focus areas include Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, and more.
  • Technical Officers/Assistants: Supporting research activities, managing labs, and operating sophisticated equipment.
  • Administrative & Support Staff: Including Finance & Accounts Officers, HR staff, and other administrative roles.
  • Project-Trainees/Interns: Opportunities for students to gain research experience.

Eligibility Criteria (2026 Standards)

For Scientific Positions (e.g., Scientist B):

  • Age Limit: Generally below 35 years for Scientist B, with relaxations for OBC (3 years), SC/ST (5 years), and Women/Ex-Servicemen as per GoI rules.
  • Education: Ph.D. in a relevant science discipline. For some entry-level scientific positions, a Master's degree (M.Sc.) in Biotechnology, Microbiology, or a related field with exceptional academic records and relevant research experience might be considered, often through project advertisements.

For Technical/Administrative Positions:

  • Age Limit: Varies from 18-27 years (for Technical Assistants/Clerks) to 30-35 years (for Officers), with standard GoI age relaxations.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, or Diploma in Engineering/Technology for technical roles, and relevant degrees for administrative and finance positions.

Note: Specific eligibility may vary significantly for project-based recruitments, which often have specialized requirements.

Selection Procedure

IMTECH's selection process for regular scientific and technical posts is typically merit and interview-based, often involving a two-stage process:

  1. Shortlisting: Candidates are shortlisted based on their academic qualifications, research publications, and experience. For specific advertised positions, GATE scores might be considered as an added advantage, but not usually as a mandatory entry gate unless specified by CSIR for certain cadres.
  2. Interview: Shortlisted candidates appear for a Personal Interview conducted by an expert panel. The interview assesses the candidate's suitability, domain knowledge, research aptitude, and potential contribution to the institute.
  3. Project-Specific Recruitment: For project-funded positions, the selection is usually based on screening of applications followed by an interview.

Salary & Perks

Salaries at IMTECH are governed by the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) for permanent positions. Project staff salaries are determined by the funding agency's guidelines.

  • Scientific Positions: Entry-level Scientific positions (Scientist B) typically fall under Level 10 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix, with a Basic Pay of ₹ 57,700, plus Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), and other allowances as admissible. Higher levels (Scientist C, D, etc.) correspond to higher pay matrices.
  • Technical/Administrative Staff: Salaries vary based on the post's level, ranging from Level 2/3 for support staff to Level 6/7/8 for Technical Officers and Administrative Officers.
  • Perks: Include Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) benefits, leave travel concession (LTC), potential for housing (if available), contribution to NPS (National Pension System), and a conducive research environment with opportunities for further training and international collaborations.

Application Process

IMTECH announcements for recruitment are generally made through:

  • Official Website: The 'Careers' or 'Recruitment' section on the official IMTECH website (imtech.res.in) is the primary source for job notifications.
  • CSIR Portal: Sometimes, recruitments are consolidated and announced through the central CSIR recruitment portal.
  • Employment News: Significant recruitments, especially for Group A posts, are published in the weekly 'Employment News'.

Candidates are usually required to submit online applications through the specified portal, along with a non-refundable application fee as prescribed. Detailed instructions, including the application link and deadline, are provided in the official notification.

How to Prepare for IMTECH Recruitment 2026 Jobs
