Research Areas: The vacancies are for specific research areas:

  • Theoretical High Energy Physics: Cosmology, Astro-particle physics (Expertise in Machine Learning Algorithm is preferred).
  • Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics: Density functional theory (computational materials science) and quantum condensed matter physics (topological states of matter and strongly correlated electrons).
  • Experimental Condensed Matter Physics: Nano-science, energy research (battery, solar cells, etc.), and low-energy accelerator related experiments.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification & Experience

  • Ph.D. Degree in relevant fields of Physics.
  • Post-Doctoral Experience:
    • Assistant Professor (E): Minimum 2 years of post-doctoral experience.
    • Reader (F): Minimum 5 years of post-doctoral experience.
  • Publications: Candidates must have good quality publications in internationally reputed peer-reviewed journals.
  • Research Aptitude: Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research.
  • Relaxation: The minimum qualification/experience requirement may be relaxed for exceptionally outstanding candidates.

Age Limit

  • Assistant Professor (E): Preferably below 35 years.
  • Reader (F): Preferably below 38 years.
  • Note: Age is calculated as of the application deadline (28/02/2026). Age relaxation applicable for SC/ST/OBC/PwD as per Govt. of India rules.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Candidates must provide names of at least three referees.
  • Shortlisted candidates will require letters of reference from at least two independent referees.

About Institute of Physics

Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar is an autonomous research institution funded jointly by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and the Government of Odisha. The Institute was officially established in 1972 by the Government of Orissa, and registered in 1972 as a registered society under societies Registration Act 1860. The Institute started functioning under the directorship of Prof. T. Pradhan on September 4, 1974 in two rented rooms of the Utkal University Guest House. After a few months, the Institute moved to a rented house in Sahid Nagar, Bhubaneswar, where its academic activities got started in January 1975 with two Faculties besides the then Director, Prof. T. Pradhan. From 1974 to 1981, the Institute functioned in rented buildings and moved to its present campus in 1981. On March 25,1985, the Institute was taken over by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).
