The National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) is a premier central autonomous body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. Originally established in 1961 as the Central Bureau of Correctional Services, the institute has a long-standing legacy in shaping India's social defence policies. It was transferred to the Department of Social Security in 1964 and has operated as a subordinate office under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment since 1975.
