The National Institute of Traditional Medicine (NITM) is a premier research institute in India dedicated to the scientific exploration and validation of traditional medicinal systems, including Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and folk practices. Operating under the aegis of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), NITM is headquartered in Belagavi, Karnataka. The institute conducts extensive research on medicinal plants, traditional healing methods, and pharmacological studies to bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and modern science. Its multidisciplinary approach helps promote the safe, effective, and evidence-based use of natural therapies for healthcare.
NITM plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting India's rich heritage of traditional medicine. It undertakes ethnobotanical surveys, clinical trials, and public health studies to assess the efficacy and safety of traditional formulations. Additionally, the institute collaborates with academic institutions, tribal communities, and healthcare professionals to document indigenous knowledge and develop new treatment strategies rooted in traditional wisdom.
