Named in honor of the revered educationist and political luminary, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the college was inaugurated by Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, then a Union Minister. This pivotal event marked the dawn of a new era for accessible and quality education in the region, particularly serving the Phaphamau area and easing the significant admission pressures on Allahabad University and its affiliated colleges.

The genesis of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Government Degree College was rooted in a clear and compelling mission: to democratize access to quality higher education for all. The visionary proposal, put forth by the Directorate of Higher Education, UP Allahabad, on April 9, 1997, received swift State Government approval on May 30, 1997, under Govt Order No: 2068 / 15-17-97-74(11)/ 97.
