Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Locations: Whole State of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala; Union Territories of Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep; SPSR Nellore & Chittoor districts of Andhra Pradesh; Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka.
  • Age Limit (as on 28.08.2026):
    • Minimum: 15 years
    • Maximum: Fresher - 22 years; Ex-ITI/MLT - 24 years
    • Relaxation: OBC(NCL) - 3 years; SC/ST - 5 years; PwBD - 10 years; PwBD+OBC - 13 years; PwBD+SC/ST - 15 years
  • Educational Qualification:
    • Fresher (Fitter, Painter, Welder): 10th Class pass (min. 50% aggregate) under 10+2 system.
    • Fresher (MLT): 12th Class pass (min. 50% aggregate) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology.
    • Ex-ITI: 10th Class pass (min. 50% aggregate) + ITI in relevant trade with NCVT/SCVT certificate.
    • Note: 50% marks in 10th is not applicable for SC/ST/PwBD candidates. Course Completed Act Apprentices, Engineering Graduates/Diploma holders, or Vocational Certificate holders with 1+ year of training/job experience are NOT eligible.

Stipend and Training Period

  • Training Duration:
    • Welder, MLT: 1 Year 3 Months
    • Fitter, Painter: 2 Years
    • Ex-ITI: Rebate as per Schedule-I of Apprentices Rules, 1992
  • Monthly Stipend:
    • Fresher (10th pass): ₹8,200
    • Fresher (12th pass)/Ex-ITI: ₹9,600
    • 10% increase in second year and 15% in third year over the prescribed minimum

Selection Process

  • Merit List:
    • Fresher: Matriculation marks converted to 200 (minimum 50% required).
    • Ex-ITI: Matriculation (converted to 100) + ITI marks (converted to 100) = Total 200.
    • MLT: Higher Secondary marks (with Physics, Chemistry, Maths & Biology) converted to 200.
  • Tie-Breaking: Older candidate preferred; if DOB same, candidate who passed Matriculation earlier.
  • No Written Exam or Interview.

About Southern Railway

Southern Railway, in its present form, came into existence on 14th April 1951 through the merger of the three state railways namely Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway, and the Mysore state railway.
