In year 1927 to make available water supply & sewerage facilities to general public, Public Health Engineering Department was conceived under the British India. In 1949 department was named as Local Self Government Department. Later on under the Uttar Pradesh Water Supply & Sewerage Act 1975, the department was changed to Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam
After the formation of Uttaranchal State through order no 2878/9-2-(12 Adhi.)/2001 dated 22.11.2002 the department was formed under Uttaranchal Govt. as Uttaranchal Peyjal Sansadhan Vikas Evam Nirman Nigam and later on Uttarakhand Peyjal Sansadhan Vikas Evam Nirman Nigam.
The department works under the Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation, Govt. of Uttarakhand as an undertaking of Uttarakhand Government. The department is mainly responsible for planning, survey, DPR preparation and execution of water supply and sewerage projects in urban & rural areas of Uttarakhand State.
