Uttarakhand came into being as a separate state on 9 November, 2000. Prior to this it was a part of the state of Uttar Pradesh. The demand for a separate was fulfilled with the passing of Uttar Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2000 on 25th August, 2000. At the time of formation, its name was Uttaranchal which was subsequently changed to Uttarakhand with the passing of Uttaranchal (change of name ) Act, 2006. The same came into force on 1 January, 2007 in accordance with the Government Of India notification dated 29th December, 2006.
