Panchayat Raj is an innovative experiment in the creation of modern India.
The Balwantrai Mehta Committee (1958) has recommended a three tier Panchayat Raj system to involve the rural masses in rural development. Accordingly, the Government of Maharashtra On May 1, 1962, the Maharashtra Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti Act 1961 was passed and a three tier Panchayat Raj was established with Zilla Parishad at district level, Panchayat Samiti at group level and Gram Panchayat at village level. Thus, Maharashtra became the ninth state in the country to adopt Panchayat Raj system.
Zilla Parishad (commonly known as ZP) is a district level local government body in India. Generally the office of Zilla Parishad is at the district headquarters.
Zilla Parishad works to disseminate information and services of various schemes of Maharashtra and Central Government to the common people in rural areas.
