Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility for Faculty (Technology Development)
- Essential Qualification: Applicants must have a Ph.D. and an excellent track record in developing technology (e.g. instruments/software/algorithms) relevant to radio astronomy.
- Experience: Entry-level faculty members are those joining after a few years of post-doctoral research. Candidates with appropriate experience can be considered for higher levels.
- Responsibilities: Faculty members are expected to spend 50% of their time on research (technological or astronomical areas, guiding M.Tech./Ph.D. students) and 50% on support activities (development of instrumentation/algorithms/software, teaching graduate courses, telescope commissioning).

The Centre has its roots in the Radio Astronomy Group of TIFR, set up in the early 1960s under the leadership of Prof. Govind Swarup. The group designed and built the Ooty Radio Telescope. In the early 80's an ambitious plan for a new telescope was proposed - the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope. Since the site chosen for this new telescope was close to Pune, a new home for the group was built in the scenic campus of Pune University. The radio astronomy group morphed into the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics around this time.
