About Braithwaite Burn Jessop Company (BBJ)

The early story of BBJ started around the mid-thirties to address the ever increasing traffic between the twin cities of Calcutta (now Kolkata) & Howrah by replacing the then existing pontoon bridge with a wider & stronger Balanced Cantilever bridge across the river Hooghly. So the three prominent engineering entities “Braithwaite, Burn & Jessop” came together with their vast experience and floated a new company on 26th January 1935 – The Braithwaite Burn & Jessop Construction Company Limited (BBJ).

The onward march began with the construction of Howrah Bridge or Rabindra Setu (1936-1942, opened to traffic on 03 Feb 1943). The second Hooghly Bridge (Vidyasagar Setu) was constructed from 03 July 1979 to 10 Oct 1992. In between BBJ has, in its record, a number of engineering landmarks spread across the India.
