The Ministry of Coal is a ministry of the Government of India responsible for overseeing the country's coal reserves, production, and distribution. The ministry was established in 1974, and its headquarters are located in New Delhi.
The primary functions of the Ministry of Coal include formulating policies and strategies related to coal production, distribution, and consumption; promoting research and development in the coal sector; and regulating the allocation and use of coal resources in the country.
The ministry is also responsible for the administration of the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015, which governs the allocation of coal blocks through the auction process. Additionally, it oversees the activities of Coal India Limited, the largest coal-producing company in the world.
The Ministry of Coal works closely with other ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Power, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Ministry of Railways, and Central Electricity Authority, to ensure the efficient and sustainable use of coal resources in India.
