Ministry of Labour and Employment is India's ministry which is responsible to protect and safeguard the interest of workers in general and the poor, deprived and disadvantaged sections of the society. It aims to create a healthy work environment for higher production and productivity and for developing and coordinating vocational skill training and employment.
The Ministry looks after : Labour Policy and legislation; Safety, health and welfare of labour; Social security of labour, Policy relating to women and child labour, Industrial relations and enforcement of labour laws, Adjudication of industrial disputes through Central Government Industrial Tribunals cum Labour Courts and National Industrial Tribunals, Education of Workers, Labour and Employment Statistics.
The Ministry attains these objectives through enactment and implementation of various labour laws, which regulate the terms and conditions of service and employment of workers.
The Central Government has enacted 44 labour related statutes dealing with minimum wages, accidental and social security benefits, occupational safety and health, conditions of employment, disciplinary action, formation of trade unions, industrial relations etc.
For welfare of workers in the unorganized sector which include weavers, handloom workers, fishermen and fisherwomen, toddy tappers, leather workers, plantation labour, beedi workers, the Ministry of Labour and Employment has enacted 'Unorganised Workers' Social Security Act, 2008'.
